May is Mental Health Awareness Month in Canada, a time when workplaces, schools, and communities pause to reflect on something that affects all of us. This year, we want to talk about a skill that often gets overlooked in the conversation: Psychological First Aid.
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is not therapy, and it doesn’t require a clinical background. It’s a practical, human-centred approach to supporting yourself and others through stress, crisis, and trauma. Developed by the Canadian Red Cross, PFA is about understanding how stress and trauma affect people and knowing how to respond in a way that helps rather than harms.
Think of it as the emotional equivalent of knowing how to put on a bandage. You may never be a doctor, but having basic skills means you can make a real difference in the moment that matters.
Why Psychological First Aid Matters in the Workplace
Workplace mental health has never been more visible. Burnout, anxiety, and the lingering effects of collective stress mean that more employees are struggling and more managers, HR professionals, and team leads are being asked to respond without any real training to back them up.
PFA gives workplaces practical tools. It helps people recognize when a colleague is struggling, understand the impact of stress and grief, and respond in a way that is supportive without overstepping. It also focuses on building personal resilience, because you can’t support others if you’re running on empty yourself.
For supervisors, team leads, healthcare workers, educators, and anyone in a support role, this is the kind of training that fills a genuine gap.
Crisis Doesn’t Stay at Work — PFA Helps You Respond at Home Too
Crisis doesn’t stay at work. Neighbours, friends, and family members go through difficult periods, loss, trauma, sudden change, and the people around them often don’t know what to say or do. PFA equips community members with the confidence to show up. Not to fix, not to diagnose, but to be present in a way that actually helps.
What You’ll Learn in the Red Cross PFA Course
The Canadian Red Cross Psychological First Aid course is delivered fully online and takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete. It covers two modules:
Self-Care: Understanding the impact of stress and trauma on yourself, and developing coping strategies that build resilience over time.
Caring for Others: Learning how to support people in your workplace or community who are going through a difficult time.
Both modules are self-paced, meaning you can work through them on your own schedule. Upon completion, you receive a certificate from the Canadian Red Cross.
It’s worth noting that PFA is distinct from Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), which is a more in-depth program focused on supporting someone during a mental health crisis. PFA is a strong starting point, accessible, practical, and relevant to everyday situations. If you are interested in MHFA, please contact us to be put on the waiting list.
Who Benefits Most From Psychological First Aid Training
Anyone can benefit. It’s particularly valuable for managers, HR teams, educators, childcare workers, community volunteers, and healthcare workers, essentially anyone who regularly shows up for others.
This May, Do More Than Share a Post
Mental Health Awareness Month isn’t just about raising awareness, it’s about taking action. Learning Psychological First Aid is one of the most concrete, accessible things a person or organization can do to make their workplace or community a little more supportive.
