ONTARIO PHARMACIST FIRST AID

Essential Training for Pharmacy Professionals

Perhaps more than ever before, pharmacists are interacting with patients—and seeing the good, bad, and ugly. When every second counts in a crisis situation, ensuring you’re fully prepared isn’t just a regulatory checkbox—it’s a matter of patient safety.

As a pharmacist, you face the dual pressure of delivering top-tier patient care while adhering to stringent industry standards. Balancing a busy workload with the critical need for precise prescription fulfillment, safe injection techniques, and patient counselling can feel overwhelming. Our specialized training is designed to address these pain points, empowering you to confidently manage emergencies while staying compliant with all regulatory requirements.

Industry Standards & Regulatory Requirements for First Aid Training

Pharmacists play an important role in health care, and as a result are held to a certain standard across the industry. The current industry standard states that pharmacists who provide patient care and/or administer injections must hold a valid certification in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C/AED.

Key Features:

  • Certification Mandate
Pharmacists—and pharmacy students or interns practicing under the supervision of an injection-trained pharmacist—must hold a valid certification equivalent to the Red Cross Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C. This is required before administering any substance by injection.
  • Influenza Immunization
Under the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP), pharmacists must also meet these standards to administer publicly funded influenza vaccines.
  • Self-Declaration Process
To register your injection training with the College, you simply acknowledge your completion of the required training. While documentation isn’t submitted directly to the College, it is essential for pharmacy professionals to maintain supporting records that are easily accessible.
For more detailed regulatory information, please refer to the OCP Website.
