PROTECT YOUR CREW

Safely Equip Your Construction Site

Proposed legislation will soon require AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) on qualifying construction sites. This first-in-Canada change highlights the high risk of cardiac events in the sector and emphasizes the need for workplaces to be better prepared.

At First Aid 4U, we believe safety goes beyond compliance. AEDs are critical, but so is making sure crews know how to use them. That’s why we provide not only CSA-approved AEDs but also Red Cross-certified First Aid and CPR training designed for construction workers, giving your team the tools and the confidence to respond when it matters most.

High Risk, High Responsibility

Cardiac arrest can strike without warning—and every minute matters.

  • 15% of cardiac-related workplace inspection reports are in the construction industry.
  • Crews face high physical demands in environments where emergency services may take longer to arrive.
  • The proposed law requires AEDs on sites lasting 3+ months with 20+ workers.

Better yet, reimbursement through WSIB could help offset the cost of AEDs (average $2,300), making compliance easier for contractors and site leads.

This isn’t just compliance—it’s a commitment to your crew’s safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When will AEDs be required on construction sites in Ontario?
A. The Ontario government has announced legislation that, if passed, will require AEDs on construction projects expected to last 3 months or longer with 20 or more workers. This change is expected to take effect soon, making it important for site managers to prepare now.

Q. What is the average cost of an AED?
A. On average, an AED costs around $2,300. The government has proposed a WSIB reimbursement program to help offset costs for small and medium-sized contractors.

Q. Why are AEDs important on construction sites?
A. Construction workers face physically demanding conditions and a higher risk of cardiac events. AEDs can increase survival rates by more than 50% when used within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest—making them a critical piece of safety equipment.

Q. Do I need training to use an AED?
A. AEDs are designed to be simple and intuitive, with voice prompts guiding the user. However, proper First Aid, CPR, and AED training ensures your crew knows exactly what to do in high-stress situations. At First Aid 4U, we provide Red Cross-certified training tailored for construction sites.

Q. Can First Aid 4U provide training directly on our jobsite?
A. Yes. We offer on-site training designed to minimize downtime and maximize relevance, with scenarios specific to construction environments.

Q. Are AEDs a compliance requirement or just a recommendation?
A. With the new legislation, AEDs will be a compliance requirement for qualifying projects. Beyond compliance, having an AED demonstrates your commitment to worker safety and can help prevent workplace fatalities.

Q. How many AEDs does a construction site need?
A. This depends on the size and layout of your site. A good rule of thumb is to ensure an AED is accessible within 3 minutes from anywhere on site. We can help you determine the best placement for coverage.

Q. Do AEDs require maintenance?
A. Yes. AEDs need regular checks, including battery and pad replacement as per manufacturer guidelines. First Aid 4U can provide guidance and support to keep your device inspection-ready.
