You’ve taken your first aid and CPR training, learned important life-saving skills, and earned your certificate—great work! But did you know those certifications don’t last forever?
Whether you took your training for work requirements, volunteer qualifications, or personal preparedness, keeping your certification current is just as important as getting it in the first place. In this blog, we’re breaking down how often you need to recertify, what counts as an eligible renewal, and why staying up to date matters more than you might think.
Why Recertify?
First aid and CPR procedures can evolve over time. The Canadian Red Cross regularly updates training to reflect the latest medical standards and best practices — like new CPR compression guidelines or updates to the use of an AED. Recertifying helps you:
- Keep your knowledge sharp for real-life emergencies
- Stay compliant with workplace safety (especially under WSIB regulations in Ontario)
- Protect those around you by using the most accurate, effective techniques
Even if you’ve never had to perform first aid, refreshers help ensure your confidence and reaction time don’t fade over the years. That’s why it’s important to know exactly when to renew.
How Often Should You Recertify?
The length of time your certification remains valid depends on the type of training you completed. Most Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR certifications are valid for three years from the date of issue, but some programs, like Basic Life Support (BLS), require annual recertification to stay current.
To maintain your certification status, you must complete your recertification before your current certificate expires. Once it lapses, even by a single day, you’ll need to retake the full course.
Note: While most certifications are valid for three years, some workplaces or regulated industries, especially healthcare and high-risk environments, require recertification every year. Always confirm your organization’s specific requirements.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how long each certification lasts and when recertification is required:
| Course Type | Recertification Frequency | Notes |
| Standard First Aid & CPR (Level C or A) | Every 3 years | Must hold a current Red Cross certificate (no other provider) |
| Emergency First Aid & CPR | No recertification option | Renewal requires taking the full course again |
| Basic Life Support (BLS) | Every 1 year | Recommended for healthcare providers and medical professionals |
| CPR/AED courses (non–first aid) | Every 3 years | Standard First Aid & CPR recertification recommended |
Keep Your Team on Track
If you manage a workplace, volunteer group, or First Aid team, staying organized with your certifications is just as important as keeping your skills current.
Download and print our free First Aid Certification Tracker to record each team member’s training details, including course type, certification date, and renewal date. Keeping this sheet in your First Aid folder or safety files makes it easy to see at a glance who’s up to date and who needs to renew soon.
| Tip: Place the tracker beside your onsite First Aid kit or in your health and safety binder so it’s always accessible for audits, inspections, or internal safety checks. |

What If Your Certificate Has Expired?
Unfortunately, there’s no grace period once your certificate expires.
If you miss the renewal window, you’ll need to retake the full certification course, which is a good reminder to check those expiry dates early!
Tip: Add a reminder to your calendar at least three months before your expiry date. That way, you can book your spot at a convenient time and avoid last-minute stress.
